Winter sucks. Seriously.

Let’s talk about what happens to skin when it’s cold and windy out. You take hot showers, which feels amazing at the time, but sap moisture. You glob extra moisturizer on top of scaly flaky skin and wonder why your poor skin continues to itch and burn.

The biggest mistake you can make is to use the same products all year round. I live in Wichita, KS where we experience all the seasons (not always sequentially, because, duh, Kansas). But it’s winter, so we’re going to ignore the sometimes 60 degree weather and focus on what you can do for your best skin. Folks, stay hydrated.

Next topic, my go-to products you’d have to pry from my cold, dead body or face my wrath.

Let’s talk about the face. Everyone has different skin yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah. However, there are guidelines everyone can follow to out their best face forward and that routine shouldn’t stray far from the following:

  • Nightly ritual. Always take your makeup off at night. Always. If you do literally nothing else, just take off your damn makeup. I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution as a makeup remover. It’s extremely gentle and doesn’t leave an oily residue. Micelle Solution is also available via other brands at a lower price point, but I can’t speak to their effectiveness or quality. My next step is to wash my face with Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash to make sure my face is really clean. It doesn’t hurt that this face wash smells divine. I use my Clarisonic in the shower (because it’s messy af, in my opinion) with the Radiance Brush Head, to help slough off dead cells and deep clean.
  • Moisturize, but keep it simple. If your routine takes more than 10 minutes, start cutting inessential steps. For me, that includes toner. I’m not a fan. I am a fan of these other ah-maz-ing products: Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which has essential oils that remind me of a sleepy spa day, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye cream, and Mario Badescu Protien Night Cream, which is super thick and I would only recommend if you live somewhere incredibly dry or during winter. I’m also loving Jack Black’s line of lip balms. Yes, they’re meant for men, but that means they’re not overtly girly scented, which I definitely appreciate. I have blackberry and black tea, shea  butter, and natural mint. Because I’m a lip balm hoarder. Trust, this is the tip of the iceberg.
  • Wake up makeup. Wash yo face! I use the frothy face wash, again. No need for separate day and night face wash. Find one that works for you and stick with it. Next a reprisal of Kiehl’s (I’m obviously a fan), this time with a newer product that has already amassed a cult following, the Daily Recovery Concentrate, which has a light citrusy scent without smelling like a lemon. Every morning ritual should include SPF in some way. If yours doesn’t, start yesterday. It’s that important. I am a big fan of Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47. Before you ask, I don’t know why they stopped at 47. It’s a weird number. But I’m in love with this moisturizer. As are many of my friends, beauty buffs and minimalists, alike. A little goes a long way and you really need to work it in or it looks white. If I put on any foundation, it’s either Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 or Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35. I’m partial to the first, as it gives a glow without looking glittery. I get compliments on my skin just about every time I wear it. As for BB’s bb, she can do no wrong and is one of the only brands to carry tints light enough for me. I am forever grateful that there is an “extra light” shade.
  • Last, but certainly not least, spoil your hands and feet! I have two hand creams in my purse, ten by my bed, one in the bathroom, another next to my chair in the living room, one in the car, several in purses and in totes I’m not currently using… It’s a legit hoarding situation, sorry, not sorry. My favorites are: Neutrogena hand cream, Aveda Hand Relief, and Egyptian Magic.

Moral of the story: if you like it, put some cream on it!
